Forgiveness by Seth Godin

Has anyone ever said or done anything unforgiveable to you?  Something so awful you know you can never forgive them?

Probably this strikes a bell with most of my readers.  It would certainly be rare to find someone who has never been mistreated, never misunderstood, never abused in one way or another.  In some cases the abuse may have been particularly nasty.  Something you would much rather forget, but find you cannot.

Does this person deserve your forgiveness?  Probably not.  Should you forgive them?  Absolutely!

Why do I say this?  If they don’t deserve your forgiveness, why should you forgive them?  Am I trying to turn you into a saint or something?

No.  I am not saying this to make you a "goody goody".  And I am certainly not suggesting you should allow anyone to take advantage of you.  So why I am saying it?

The reason is that I believe you deserve to be free.  You deserve to be happy.  You deserve to be able to do whatever you wish in life and not be weighed down carrying a load dumped on you by someone else.

If there is anyone you have not forgiven for what they have done or said to you this means you are allowing that person to control your life.  You are giving them the ultimate victory over you.  Is that what you want?  If not, you simply have to find a way to forgive them.

Some of you may now be saying "it’s all very well for you to say that, but you don’t know how I have suffered!  You cannot understand just how bad this was!"

I agree I cannot know what it is like to suffer in the way you may have suffered.  To use a common Christian saying, we each have our own cross to bear.  The one you are bearing may be far heavier than mine.  But even though I cannot understand just how bad it was for you, what I do understand is that you are now carrying an unnecessary burden.  Just like "Christian" in John Bunyan’s "Pilgrim’s Progress".  Christian was carrying a burden so heavy he could hardly move.  So are you if there is someone you have not forgiven.  Your happiness is marred because every so often you think of this unforgiveable thing that was done to you and it spoils what would otherwise be a lovely moment in a lovely day.  Why not simply throw that burden away?  It is not stuck to you with superglue.  You have chosen to carry it.  Now you should choose to throw it away.

There may be others who will say "but there is nobody I haven’t forgiven!  Nobody has done anything particularly bad to me!"  If so, you are very fortunate!  But I would suggest there are probably some slights, some grievances, some humiliations that your conscious mind has forgotten but are still bubbling away somewhere under the surface.  You do not feel desperately unhappy, but because there are some unforgiving words and actions loitering in your unconscious mind what could be a really happy moment is, instead, just mildly pleasant.  These unforgiving things are stopping you reaching your full potential.  They are controlling you.

Would you like to free yourself of this burden?  Great!

The first thing you must do is find all the actions and words you have not yet forgiven.  Some may be easy to find.  Others will be hiding under the surface.  Sit quietly and let them come to you.

Now, for each unforgiving act or word find the person.  Picture that person in ,your mind.  Say to them "I forgive you".  At first you will probably feel silly. But don’t worry about that.  Nobody is watching you.  Nobody is laughing at you.  This is something you are doing for yourself so you can be happier.

As you do this you will find a part of your mind will tell you that this person does not deserve your forgiveness.  You can immediately dispel that thought by saying "they may not deserve it, but I am forgiving them for me, not for them!"  This other part of your mind may say it was totally wrong of them to do this to you.  Respond by saying "I am not the one who will judge them for it, and I am not asking them or anyone else to do this again to me, I am just letting go so this act no longer controls me.  I forgive!"

If you are a Christian you should remember the phrase in the Lord’s Prayer "Forgive me my wrongdoings as I forgive those who have done wrong to me"?  Whether or not you are a Christian this is a phrase I would like you to remember and use.  When you forgive others you will find that forgiveness of yourself comes quite naturally too.  But give it a helping hand anyway.  Add your own wrongdoings now.  See them clearly and then forgive yourself.  As long as you have forgiven others you should find you are now able to forgive yourself.  When you do you really should find you feel light and buoyant.  You have let go of your burden.

Try to perform this act of forgiveness every day.  I suggest you do it last thing at night before you go to sleep, as you should find your sleep will then be that much more refreshing.  Try it, let go, don’t allow anyone to control you any more and see just how much difference this makes in your life!

Your Hero In Times of Need

Rob KayeIf I could share 500 words to inspire, this is the important wisdom I’d want to pass along to others…

You are the hero you’ve been waiting for. No matter what challenge you’re facing, there is no one who can save you the way that you can. We all need support, but it’s up to you to take the first step.

Deep down within all of us is a strong spirit, an unseen force that we’re born with. I call it the hero within us — and you are the hero you’ve been waiting for. When you’re lost, when you’re feeling like you need someone to rescue you, that someone is you.

The most important thing you’ll ever do in life is take care of yourself. Find out who you are, what you need, what you want. The more you take care of yourself, the more the universe will take care of you.

The longest distance is from the head to the heart. Sometimes we focus so much on being the figure out there that we forget to enjoy life. It’s good to take a break from thinking and just live from the heart more. Sometimes the best solution to any challenge is to leave it alone and go have some fun.

Go where it’s warm. You don’t have to chase unavailable people. You don’t have to change them or change yourself for them. Choose people who, when you need them, run to you instead of running to the hills.

It’s so powerful to go from can’t to won’t. “I won’t be in this bad relationship anymore. I won’t work at this job anymore.” When you go from can’t to won’t, then you go from being a victim to being empowered.

People want to be heard. Listening is underrated.

You don’t have to get anyone’s approval anymore. You’re not asking for approval, you’re giving it.

Look people in the eye. Let them really see you.

Life is meant to be enjoyed. Really.

In any situation, when the pain outweighs the pleasure, it’s time to go.

Sometimes just accepting something for what it is helps alleviate the obsession to change it.

You and your romantic soul mate will meet at exactly the right time when you’re both ready. Until then, focus on the soul mates you already have in your life. Maybe it’s a family member, a friend or a co-worker who is a special person in your life.

I think the next stage of the sexual revolution is going to be where men are accepted for being sensitive yet still strong and women are accepted for being strong yet still feminine.

Relax. You don’t have to figure it all out today.

Listen to your intuition. It’s a great guide for you.

Don’t give up. Most people don’t achieve their goal because they gave up too soon. It may be a hard climb, but if you stay the course, you will eventually succeed. It’s inevitable. If you feel like you’re having trouble keeping the dream alive, take a breather and get some rest. You’ll get your second wind. Whatever it takes, don’t give up.

Believe in yourself and your abilities. That is the only way to attract wonderful things into your life. Don’t waste your time thinking that you cannot do something. Dr. Steve & Frank

A wise man watches his faults more closely than his virtues; fools reverse the order.  We all have within us the potential for greatness or for failure. Both possibilities are an innate part of our character. Whether we reach for the stars or plunge to the depths of despair depends in large measure on how we manage our positive and negative potential. It is doubtful that, if left unchecked, your virtues will rage out of control. Unfortunately, the reverse is not true about your faults. Left unattended, faults have a way of multiplying until they eventually choke out your good qualities. The surest way to control your faults is to attack them the moment they appear. – Napoleon Hill

Trevor is a life and metaphysics coach who’s studied the human mind and its desires for almost 40 years.

If I could share 500 words of wisdom to summarize what I’ve learned so far in life, these are the important things I’d want to pass along to others…

You do not have free will. I’m sorry if I’m the first to break that to you.
What you have is total freedom to choose how you will follow the laws of the universe. If you try to change or break or ignore the laws you will struggle and suffer. That’s not a threat. It isn’t divine retribution.
Let’s look at it another way.

You can cook toast in your toaster. But should you decide to boil water in your toaster, or worse, that you are going to try to keep the electricity coming down the cables at bay with your fingers, I assure you, you’re going to suffer. The electricity isn’t vengeful. It’s just electricity. You just don’t have that kind of power or free will. But you do have the resourcefulness to invent a better kind of toaster if you want to.
See what I mean?  Now, that’s electricity, but what about the law of attraction? The one that says, "Ask and it is given"?

You have an incredible gift; one in which you do have total freedom – and that is the gift of imagination. With imagination you can change your thoughts – what you think about and how you think about a thing. As you do that, you’ll notice that your feelings will follow.
You can make yourself feel good – at will. You have that freedom. So why don’t you use it?
This is not a universe where you look at something and react with worry or fear, but to watch our news and most people’s behaviour, you’d think so, wouldn’t you?

What you perceive every day with your five senses isn’t reality – it’s results! The results of what you have thought and believed – in general – thus far in your life.
If you consciously and consistently change your general thoughts and beliefs, your reality will change too. Not instantly – there’s a time lag. Plant seeds and you will get plants – eventually.

Seeds are a good metaphor for us. I planted some herb seeds – chives and parsley among others. Where I planted chive seeds, chives began to grow, and parsley where the parsley seeds were and so on.   So what? you ask.

Well, if you plant seeds of success and happiness in your mind, and constantly nourish those seeds, it is inevitable that you will start to see success and happiness filling your life. You need to do this even if your five senses are telling you that right now things are different to that. Because "right now" was planted in your mind some time ago. Today’s circumstances are the fruits of your old thoughts!

Plant new seeds, get new plants.
Plant and nurture every day the seeds of a fulfilling, joyous life and that’s exactly what you will have. I promise because it wasn’t my idea. It was God’s.        Trevor Emdon

Wise Words  “There are those of us who are always about to live. We are waiting until things change, until there is more time, until we are less tired, until we get a promotion, until we settle down – until, until, until. It always seems as if there is some major event that must occur in our lives before we begin living.” -George Sheehan
