What your brain does normally

The electrical activity of the brain is measured in terms of “waves.” That means if you hook your head up to a machine that measures the electrical output of your brain, you’ll see it form a wave on the screen.

Your brain produces five basic types of waves. They’re called Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, and Gamma. While this sounds like a college fraternity, it’s really a measure of how fast or slow your brain is working at any given time.

Now here’s where what’s not in your brain comes in…

During most of the day when you’re working, texting, emailing, driving, or doing anything active, your brain waves are primarily in a Beta pattern.

But, if you want to find a creative solution to a problem or receive insights or breakthrough ideas on a challenge you’re facing, your brain needs to slow down to a Theta, Alpha, or Theta-Alpha pattern. These types of patterns occur when you’re drowsy, relaxed, and reflective (but not sleepy), or in a state in which a silent current of thoughts, images, and memories emerge spontaneously in your mind.

The problem is, with updates and news coming at you by the minute, and distractions and temptations just a keystroke away, it can be very difficult to achieve these slower brainwave patterns during the course of a normal day.

How to avoid the thing!

This is a waste for the buyer and the seller.

When you have a business or individual waiting for you to bring them custom work, it can lead to an endless cycle of, "hmmmm not quite right." If the architectural drawings, high-heeled shoes or ad campaign doesn’t meet their unstated standards, you’re back to doing it again.

Sometimes you can make a handsome profit on all the fees you charge to redo things that indulge the ego of the customer, but more likely than not, your time is wasted until they’re happy. If you have a client who feels the same way, you can work together to save time and money by being clear with each other about what’s wanted.

I think helping a client say what they want before they see it is a worthy endeavor.

  1. Do it on purpose. When engaging with a new client, intentionally create an environment where personal taste is described in advance, and as much boundary-building as possible is done when it’s cheap to iterate, not at the end when it’s expensive.
  2. Demand benchmarks. The world is filled with things that are a lot like what you’ve been asked to create. So mutually identify them. Show me three other websites that feel like what you’re hoping to feel like. Hand me a hardcover book that has type that reads the way you want yours to read. Walk me through a building that has the vibe you’re looking for…
  3. Describe the assignment before you start. Using your words and the words of the client, precisely state what problem you’re trying to solve. "We’re trying to build something that does a, b and c, and not d…"
  4. Then, before you show off your proposal, before you hand in your work, restate the problem again. "You asked us to do a, b and c at a cost of under X. What I’m about to show you does a, it does b and it does c… and it costs half of X." This sort of intentional restatement of the scope of work respects your client by honoring their stated intent, at the same time it focuses your work on the stated goals.
  5. Make a decision about whether you want a reputation for doing this sort of focused work. If you do, don’t work for clients who don’t buy into the process. Over time, you’ll earn the kind of clients you want.

Of course, this isn’t going to work every time. Sometimes the client loves the power of saying no. Sometimes the client isn’t articulate enough to describe what she wants. And sometimes the goal is magic, and no one knows how to describe that in advance.

Four questions worth answering

Who is your next customer? (Conceptually, not specifically. Describe his outlook, his tribe, his hopes and dreams and needs and wants…)

What is the story he told himself (about the world, about his situation, about his perceptions) before he met you?

How do you encounter him in a way that he trusts the story you tell him about what you have to offer?

What change are you trying to make in him, his life, or his story?

Start with this before you spend time on tactics, technology or scalability.

5 WAYS TO INSPIRE CHANGE

Have you ever been so frustrated with your work environment that you want to run away, never to come back again?  Have you ever felt desperately hopeless, not knowing how to motivate your people or make your manager listen to you?  Or have you ever felt so powerless to change what seems like the size of the Titanic, overwhelmed and outnumbered, in your attempt to improve your working conditions and results?

The sad truth is, from personal experience in any case, that if you answered yes to any of these questions, you’re far from alone.  Rather, I would risk saying that you are in a very average organization. Chances are that the majority of the people and workplaces you interact with will feel very similar.

It’s like a constant tug of war between employer and employee. The employee feels frustrated that the workplace doesn’t change, and the employer feels frustrated that the employees don’t change.

Everyone waits for someone, or something else to change, resulting in no change at all.

We rather choose the road more travelled, the typical keeping-up-with-the-Jones’ syndrome, out of fear of embarking on something new and unknown. We follow the buzzwords and do things the way it’s always been done, rather than exploring unknown territory.  We are so afraid that we might end up in a dead end and have to turn around, even though on the other hand, we might discover a valuable treasure. Our inborn negativity bias makes us choose known over unknown whenever there is the slightest risk of failure.

Yet, the most beautiful view always emerges after the hardest climb.  And did Columbus not explore unknown territory, the world as we know it would be a very different place.  In order to succeed, you need to embrace and inspire change.  Don’t wait for someone else to change. Rather, be the change you want to see in your workplace.

Here are five ways to inspire change in your workplace:

1. It must be a choice

You can’t tell someone to be inspired, so don’t try to tell someone to change.  No change forced on someone will result in sustained change.

To use the brilliant metaphor by Rick Hanson, forced change is like Teflon – nothing sticks – while voluntary change is like Velcro.

For change to stick, it has to be voluntary.

If you believe you d1on’t have the time to get buy-in, think again.  The reason why people fall back into old habits the moment that there is a crisis is because it gives them permission to break the rules, allowing them to do things the way they feel comfortable with and prefer, not the rules imposed on them by management.

Taking the time to allow people to choose the change might postpone the change for a while, yet it will probably result in a successful and sustainable change in the end.  Forcing change on someone because there is no time, will most certainly result in the transformation failing. Not only have you wasted a lot of time, you don’t have any results to show for it.   So do you really not have the time?

2. Demonstrate quick wins

One of the most valuable things I learned as a consultant was to identify and implement quick wins immediately.  As consultants usually come with a much higher price tag than full-time employees, they are expected to show value for money immediately.

When someone is not aware of the need to change, try to find one small, actionable thing that will immediately show an improvement.  Demonstrating quick wins are like giving a sample of a product.  Either they will see the value and want more, or decide that it is not for them.  Yet, even though they decide not to embark on a journey of change immediately, your quick win has planted a seed which will surely germinate and grow into a plant sooner or later.

Listen to the complaints, and address the biggest pain point without asking for any resources or incentives.

To demonstrate what I mean, I recently had the opportunity to spend time at a design and print company. The owner complained about the constant, and often unnecessary, interruptions, keeping her from doing what she’s good at, namely the creative side of things.  On top of that, her workload seemed extremely high yet she didn’t know what to do about it. The helpers she employed, on the other hand, seemed to do nothing for large parts of the day.

After further investigation, I realized her management style was the main cause of both problems – an easy problem to solve. I immediately implemented a simple Scrum board which stopped the interruptions by having two daily stand-ups to discuss any issues, alleviating her biggest pain point. The following week, on a quiet day, I facilitated a training session to allow the under-utilized employees to do the printing.  It left her much happier, able to focus on the creative side while filling up the other employee’s day and learning a much desired new skill which they.

Neither required any additional resources or investments while giving immediate relief for the most painful problem. It also proved valuable enough to her to commit on embarking on coaching program with me.

3. Adapt your style

Having spent a year in Thailand teaching English, I’ve had to find ways to get my lessons across without speaking Thai.  I quickly realized that tried and tested methods that worked in the western culture had no value in the Thai culture. I had to change my teaching style.

What I, for example, considered to be a world famous people, places or things in order to explain concepts, they have never heard of.  To make it worse, their language doesn’t seem to have any similarities to English.  There are no tenses in Thai, no punctuation, no distinction between sentences and paragraphs, and the sounds are totally different, with concepts such as word stress unknown to them.

Determined to succeed, however, I experimented with ways to leverage on learning methods they are familiar with, like remembering and repeating facts and finding fields of interest that would spark their interest by giving them projects where they could choose the object of the discussion.

When the student doesn’t understand, it’s the teacher’s fault.

Suddenly I found that my students not only keen to come to class, but their progress was extraordinary.  I taught the same skills, but I changed my style.

Similarly, with organizational change, you can’t expect the employees to buy into the change program by speaking your language.  You need to adapt your style to speak in a language that the recipient understands.

4. Push through the discomfort

When people stubbornly refuse to see the need for change, it often hurts the people and organization around them.  Either because of fear or ego, they hold onto dysfunctional situations, causing more harm each day they refuse to change. To make a stubborn leader aware of a need to change, direct confrontation might be required, pushing through the discomfort that follows with compassion.

Sometimes you have to open the wound in order to remove the splinter.

To get the other person to see your point, you have to honestly say what you think and feel, even though it might hurt the other person.  When they get angry or want to walk away, keep going.  Push through.  Don’t stop!

Denial is usually followed by anger.  Anger always covers a deep hurt, with people feeling humiliated, embarrassed, vulnerable, exposed.  Treat them with the necessary kindness and compassion, and finally, attempt to find a resolution.

5. Walk away

Sometimes people will not allow you to push through the discomfort, and the best thing you can do in this case is to walk away.

Either both they and you will be relieved from the discomfort that a change agent demands or they will realize the need for change and finally see your value.

You don’t know what you have until you’ve lost it.

Most people don’t realize what they have until it’s gone.  By walking away you give the company the opportunity to see your true worth.  If they really value you, they will ask for you to come back and in so commit to change. If they don’t, you will be much happier in a more nurturing work environment where you feel more valued.

Don’t hold onto a dysfunctional environment. They might not be ready for the change you propose, or they might not think it is needed.  Either, or, change has to be voluntary.

Conclusion

Being an inspiring leader who inspires change in the workplace is not a special gift you are born with, it is a skill like any that you can learn.

Change starts with an awareness that there is a need to change.  It requires courage to explore the unknown and be vulnerable.  Inspiring sustainable change requires voluntary buy-in into the change program and a strong leader who will be able to push through the fears.

How You Can Choose Wealth Over Riches

I’m proud of my financial position in life, but contrary to what a lot of people may think, I never aspired to be rich. I wanted to be wealthy. It wasn’t always that way, though. I think there was a lot of fear driving me. Fear of being poor again and fear of going back to that impoverished life from my childhood.

Being rich and being wealthy seem to be synonymous with success. However, there’s a big difference between the two. The main difference between being rich and being wealthy is knowledge. Wealthy people know how to make money, while rich people only have money. Rich people are motivated by money, but wealthy people are motivated by their dreams, purpose and passion. Most rich people make a lot of money with their paychecks but the moment they stop working, they also stop making money. Wealth, true wealth, is often generational money and money that works for you.

Most people do want to be rich. We want to enjoy the fruits of their labor and live a life that is more fortunate and ultimately extravagant than the average man. We dream of having the nice things. These are things that everyone wants, but very few actually achieve. Essentially, it comes down to the person and their mindset. It also comes down to their purpose, motivation and will power. It’s never the ones that are just motivated by money, it’s the ones who are motivated to change the world and build a legacy because that is what wealth really is.

Your ability to cultivate desire and take persistent action is what will make you successful, not your natural talents. It’s all about consistent daily action. Wealthy and rich people both may experience downfalls and failures in their ventures. However, wealthy people are knowledgeable when it comes to money matters and can start all over again and build wealth over time.

The key to acquiring wealth is to regularly monitor and increase your passive and portfolio income by increasing your means to earn and decreasing your expenses. The moment you decide to make passive and portfolio income a part of your financial habit and discipline yourself in building it, you are on your way to financial freedom.

This is the path in maintaining a strong wealth foundation. Never forget that what you do on a daily basis determines your habits, and your habits determine who you are, what you accomplish, and the legacy you leave. People will measure you by what you do and what you have managed to accomplish in your lifetime, which then of course leads to your legacy.

If you have inspired people and they can share and tell your story for generations to come, then you have created wealth in your life. You have left a legacy. You have done something different – you didn’t settle for simply being rich.

I don’t work for my money. It works for me. That’s the key to separating the wealthy from the rich. While I am still working diligently on my plan to independent wealth, I am confident I am on the right path. Which path will you choose?

They perform herculean feats of strength and endurance, things they never dreamed they were capable of doing. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could harness that strength and make it available anytime you need it? You can — if you believe you can. No doubt you can remember a time in your life when you were exceptionally focused on your objective, a time when you achieved more in less time than ever before. Perhaps it was an impending vacation that motivated you to get everything done before you departed, or perhaps it was a “must pass” exam that helped you focus your concentration. 5 Unique Ways to Forgive and Let Go

There is great value in every act of forgiveness.  You can forgive yourself, you can forgive others, and you can forgive even when you don’t know exactly who to forgive, because forgiveness is not about who is to blame or who is at fault.  It is about letting go, completely and permanently within yourself.

Forgiveness is recognizing the reality that what has happened has already happened, and that there’s no point in allowing it to dominate the rest of your life.  Forgiveness refreshingly cleans the slate and enables you to step forward.  Here are five unique ways to make this step possible:

1.  Stop trying for a while.

If you’re trying hard and haplessly making zero progress, stop trying.  Stop trying and start being.

When you see yourself as trying – to do something else or get somewhere else – you don’t interpret what you have and where you are as being good enough.  This perception of constantly trying makes living seem like an endless struggle.

There is great value within you right here, right now.  Allow it to come out, willingly and without a struggle.  Instead of trying to get to some other point in your life, give your full attention to doing your very best with the life you are living now.  Instead of believing that you are not there yet, be grateful that you are right where you are meant to be at this moment.

Yes, by all means set goals and take steps in the right direction, but don’t disregard the steps as you take them – these steps are your life’s story.  Let go of all the needless trying and let yourself take these steps peacefully and mindfully.  Let go of the judgments, forgive the past, and let this moment be as incredible as it is.  (This is something Angel and I discuss in the Adversity and Happiness chapters of 1,000 Little Things Happy, Successful People Do Differently.)

2.  Be the watcher of your thoughts and emotions.

In his best selling book, The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle tells us to be the watcher of our thoughts.  What he suggests is that instead of trying to change our thoughts – via gratitude or deliberate forgiveness, for example – we need to simply notice our thoughts without getting caught up in them.

You are ultimately the sole creator of your own feelings.  When negative thoughts arise based on past experiences or future worries, as they sometimes will, realize that these are simply issues your mind (not you) is working through.  Pause, be present and pay close attention.  Think about these thoughts and emotions consciously, almost as if you were a bystander looking in.  Separate yourself from your mind’s thinking.

Perhaps after you study your thoughts and emotions you will think to yourself, “Wow, am I really still working through that?”  And guess what?  Over time, your negative feelings and emotions will lessen and genuine awareness, love and acceptance will grow in their place.  You will begin to realize that your mind is just an instrument, and you are in control of your mind, not the other way around.

By not judging your thoughts or blaming them on anyone else, and merely watching them, there will be a big shift within you – your sense of self worth.

It’s not like you won’t get upset anymore or never feel anxious, but knowing that your thoughts and emotions are just fleeting feelings that are independent of YOU will help ease your tension and increase your positive presence, allowing you to forgive and let go.

3.  Love.

Feeling sorry for yourself and sabotaging the present moment with resentful thoughts of the past won’t make anything better.  Hurting someone else will never ease your own inner angst.

If you’re disappointed with yourself or frustrated with someone else, the answer is not to take it out on the world around you.  Retribution, whether it’s focused on yourself or others, brings zero value into your life.

The way beyond the pain from the past is not with vengeance, mockery, bullying or retaliation, but with present love.

Forgive the past, forgive yourself, forgive others, and love the present moment for what it’s worth.  There are plenty of beautiful things to love right now; you just have to want to see them.  Loving is never easy, especially when times are tough, yet it is easily the most powerful and positively enduring action possible.

If you’re feeling pain, don’t take action that creates even more pain.  Don’t try to cover darkness with darkness.  Find the light.  Act out of love.  Do something that will enable you to move forward toward a more fulfilling reality.  There is always something good you can do.  There is always love to give.  Fill your heart with it and act in everyone’s best interest, especially your own.

4.  Seek positive revenge by living well.

Are you contemplating revenge?  You know that’s negative thinking getting the best of you.  However, there is a way to seek revenge positively.

How?  Forget about them.  Remember you.  Working on a better you is more fulfilling than hanging on to contempt of others.  Let it all go and hold on to your growth and kindness instead.  If you train yourself to consistently be more loving in thoughts and actions, your positive energy will attract more positive results into your current reality.

Be unlike the person or situation that hurt you.  Let go and grow past your pain.  Carry on living well in a way that creates peace in your heart.  The energy you would spend trying to get real revenge can be better spent creating an amazing future for yourself.

The bottom line is that the best revenge is happiness, because nothing drives your adversaries more insane than seeing a fresh smile on your face.  (Read Buddha’s Brain.)

5.  Let go of the need to forgive every mistake.

Mistakes are the growing pains of wisdom.  Most of the time they just need to be accepted, not forgiven.

There is an obvious shift in your heart and mind that happens when you go from feeling hurt and upset to peaceful and loving, but it’s not necessarily forgiveness that’s taking place, it’s just the realization that there was nothing to forgive in the first place.

To help you wrap your head around this concept, try to look at your situation from 40,000 feet.  Imagine a more seasoned, wiser and more compassionate version of yourself sitting at the mountaintop of life, looking down and watching as the younger minded, current version of you hacks your way through life.

You see yourself holding on to false beliefs and making epic errors of judgment as you manoeuvre through life’s many obstacles.  You watch the children of the world growing up in challenging times that test their sense of self-confidence, yet they push forward bravely.  You see the coming generation radiating with passion and love as they fail forward, learning through their mistakes.

And you have to wonder:  Would this wiser version of yourself conclude that everyone in their own unique way was doing their very best.  And if everyone is trying to do their best, what needs to be forgiven?  Not being perfect?

Perfection doesn’t exist.  Forgiveness is oftentimes the simple realization that there is nothing that actually needs to be forgiven.
