6 Things Happy People Never Do

PMA Added:

You just might be the miracle someone is looking for today.
Remember that every single moment has a miracle of possibility.
If I am present to the moment, something I know, something I can share, something I can give or some way I can presence love can actually bring a miracle in a moment that I am sharing with someone.
I encourage you to walk through this day remembering that you just might be the miracle someone is looking for today. Here’s To Miracles, Mary Morrissey

6 Things Happy People Never Do

Happiness is not something you postpone for the future;
it is something you design into the present.

Happy people do a lot of things.  They spend time expressing gratitude, cultivating optimism, practicing kindness, nurturing loving relationships, committing to meaningful goals, savouring life’s little pleasures, and so on and so forth.

But they NEVER…

1.  Mind other people’s business.

Forget about what others are doing.  Stop looking at where they are and what they have.  Nobody is doing better than you because nobody can do better than you.  YOU are walking your own path.  Sometimes the reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the-scenes circumstances with everyone else’s public highlight reel.  We listen to the noise of the world, instead of ourselves.  So stop the comparisons!  Ignore the distractions.  Listen to your own inner voice.  Mind your own business.

Keep your best wishes and your biggest goals close to your heart and dedicate time to them every day.  Don’t be scared to walk alone, and don’t be scared to enjoy it.  Don’t let anyone’s ignorance, drama, or negativity stop you from being the best you can be.  Keep doing what you know in your heart is right, for YOU.  Because when you are focused on meaningful work and at peace within yourself, almost nothing can shake you.  (Angel and I discuss this in more detail in the “Passion and Growth” chapter of 1,000 Little Things Happy, Successful People Do Differently.)

2.  Seek validation of self-worth from others.

When you are content to simply be yourself, without comparing and competing to impress others, everyone worthwhile will respect you.  And even more importantly, you will respect yourself.

How are you letting others define you?  What would you do differently if you knew nobody would judge you?

Truth be told, no one has the right to judge you.  People may have heard your stories, and they may think they know you, but they can’t feel what you are going through; they aren’t living YOUR life.  So forget what they think and say about you.  Focus on how you feel about yourself, and keep walking the path that feels best under your feet.

Those who accept you are your friends.  Those who don’t are your teachers.  If someone calls you something and it’s true, it’s not your problem because it’s true.  If someone calls you something and it’s not true, it’s not your problem because it’s not true.  Either way, whatever they call you is not your problem.  What other people call you is their problem…

What you call yourself, and who you decide to become, is your problem.

3.  Rely on other people and external events for happiness.

Unhappiness lies in that gap between what we have now and what we think we need.  But the truth is, we don’t need to acquire anything more to be content with what we already have.  We don’t need anyone else’s permission to be happy.  Your life is magnificent not because someone says it is, or because you have acquired something new, but because you choose to see it as such.  Don’t let your happiness be held hostage.  It is always yours to choose, to live and experience.

As soon as you stop making everyone and everything else responsible for your happiness, the happier you’ll be.  If you’re unhappy now, it’s not someone else’s fault.  Take full responsibility for your own unhappiness, and you will instantly gain the ability to be happier.  Stop seeking in vain to arrange conditions that will make you happy.  Simply choose to appreciate the greatness that is yours in this moment, and the right conditions will start to line up around the contentment you seek.

The greater part of your happiness or unhappiness depends upon your outlook, and not upon our situation.  Even if things aren’t perfect right now, think of all the beauty still left around you.  A good reason to smile is always one thought away; choose to tap into it any time you like.  (Read The Gifts of Imperfection.)

4.  Hold on to resentment.

Let today be the day you stop being haunted by the ghosts from your past.  What happened in the past is just one chapter in your story; don’t close the book, just turn the page.

We’ve all been hurt by our own decisions and by others, and while the pain of these experiences is normal, sometimes it lingers for too long.  Feelings of resentment urge us to relive the same pain over and over, and we have a hard time letting go.

Forgiveness is the remedy.  It allows you to focus on the future without combating the past.  To understand the infinite potential of everything going forward is to forgive everything already behind you.  Without forgiveness, wounds can never be healed and personal growth can never be achieved.  It doesn’t mean you’re erasing the past, or forgetting what happened.  It means you’re letting go of the resentment and pain, and instead choosing to learn from the incident and move on with your life.

5.  Spend prolonged periods of time in negative environments.

You can’t make positive choices for the rest of your life without an environment that makes those choices easy, natural, and enjoyable.  So protect your spirit and potential from contamination by limiting your time with negative people and the environments they inhabit.

When other people invite you to act like victims, when they whine and moan about the unfairness of life, for example, and ask you to agree, to offer condolences, and to participate in their grievances, WALK AWAY.  When you join in that game of negativity you always lose.

Even when you’re alone, create a positive mental space for yourself.  Make it a point to give up all the thoughts that make you feel bad, or even just a few of them that have been troubling you, and see how doing that changes your life.  You don’t need negative thoughts.  They are all lies.  They solve nothing.  All they have ever given you is a false self that suffers for no reason.  (Read Buddha’s Brain.)

6.  Resist the truth.

It is a certain deathtrap when we spend our lives learning how to lie, because eventually these lies grow so strong in our minds that we become bad at seeing, telling and living our own truth.  Lives come apart so easily when they have been held together with lies.  If you resist the truth, you will live a lie every day as the truth haunts your thoughts every night.  You simply can’t get away from your truth by moving dishonestly from one place to the next.

So don’t bend; don’t water it down; don’t try to hide the truth with deception; don’t edit your own soul according to the fashion of what’s popular.  It is better to offer no explanation or excuse than a false one.  It takes courage and strength to admit the truth, but it is the only way to truly live.  Accept what is, embrace it fully, and live for the possibilities that lie ahead.

Your turn…

When we start looking at everything that might go wrong, we fear then to attempt.  Our opportunity today is to pay attention to any thoughts that could be vibrations of doubt and turn them into faith.  Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt.  But not today.  Our doubts will not have their way with us today.  Our faith shall prevail.  To Your Prevailing Faith,  Mary Morrissey

Don’t blame children who are bad. Blame those who failed to discipline them.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once observed, “Our chief want in life is somebody who will make us do what we can.” Although children doubtless do not recognize it at the time, they crave discipline, particularly during their formative years. Discipline defines boundaries for them, provides security, and is an active expression of a parent’s love. Most important, it prepares them for the challenges of adulthood. If your childhood was less than perfect, you are in good company. Most of us have experienced difficulties at one time or another, and we all make mistakes from time to time. The good news is that while your environment as a child will have a profound influence upon the person you become, it is not the sole determinant. The person you choose to be is entirely up to you. Only you can decide who and what you will become in life. Napoleon Hill

From Karina in California – ‘I Love Myself For The First Time’

I sit here in tears of joy!

I don’t remember how I attracted The Secret to me… I know I wanted to buy it for my sister and a friend for Christmas so they could "find themselves", and I ended up getting one for me and just started reading it. Not realizing that I was the one who needed to find myself.

My husband and I had decided that having me stay home to take care of the kids was better for them. Loved the first few months, but then I started devaluing myself, feeling depressed, unappreciated. By then I had started watching my niece, so I had two toddlers to take care of and an 8 year old. My niece and son started being so bad, my son was hitting, my niece would cry all day, and I was going insane! Depressed, hating my life, myself, and many times had thoughts of ending my life.

One night I was reading The Secret, the part about loving ourselves. I closed my eyes and saw myself hugging myself and loving me! Might sound weird, but that is how I visualized it. I cried, because I had never felt that much love for myself! I had always battled with weight issues. But I now love myself so much, and accept myself, and I shall ask and I shall receive!

The Secret has changed my life! I didn’t realize how much negative energy I have had around me all my life! And I cry to realize that my kids behaviour wasn’t them – it was me!! I was bringing all this negative energy around me and them!

Now they are the sweetest little angels, they listen, don’t hit, they only cry when they fall, etc. The relationship with my husband is better than ever, because when he compliments me I know it’s true. Before I wouldn’t believe, but now I know it is true!

I know this is just the beginning of my true life! I am thankful for all involved in making The Secret. It all makes sense now!

Change in a country begins with one person. Each country reflects the inner peace or turmoil of its mass population, and so as one person changes they affect the rest of the population. One person has the power within them to bring massive change to their country through immense love and peace within themselves. But we cannot bring about peace and well-being to our country unless we have conquered that in our own life. Do you see? You cannot give what you do not have.                          Each person’s job is to bring utter harmony into their own life, and then they will become the greatest human gift for their country and the world.                              May the joy be with you,  “The Secret & The Power”  Rhonda Byrne

4 Ways to Accept Where You Are

Topics: Acceptance, Change, Judgment, Transformation

“Now that I am trying to change, I don’t like who I am.”

At some point, many of my clients say this or something similar. When they finally see a new way to be, but are not yet capable of acting that way, they begin to attack themselves.

“I am a horrible person.”

“Being this way is bad.”

“It is wrong to act like this.”

These thoughts are natural, but not helpful. There are some very simple ways to begin accepting who you are so you can move into who you want to be.

See the Truth

When I work with individuals who are trying to lose weight, the first step is for them to truly see and accept where they are. Yes, they may have twenty more pounds than they would like, but that is the truth of the situation. If they constantly think they should be different than they really are, no changes can be made. We must first accept where we are before we can make changes.

Stop Labelling

We are often our worst critics. We will tell ourselves how bad, wrong, or horrible we are. This is also not seeing the truth. When we belittle ourselves, we are judging ourselves based on our perception of right and wrong. Judging also makes us stuck. We feel a powerless victim to the label. Instead, reframe your actions as being helpful or unhelpful. This frees you to make changes.

Love Your Shadow

We all have positive and negative aspects. Sometimes a positive, like being a Type A, can become a negative when it is out of control. See yourself as a whole person with shadow and light. One cannot exist without the other. Know your shadow and work to manage it instead of sentencing yourself to unhappiness because you have a shadow.

Celebrate Your Progress

Take a moment and see where you started. Yes, you may not be where you want to be, but how far have you come? Celebrate what you have already accomplished and be grateful for your progress knowing that there is more and better to come.

Take possession of your own mind, and you may soon make life pay off on your terms.  Your mind is unquestionably your most valuable possession. You may lose every material thing you own, but knowledge can never be taken from you. With it, you can earn a new fortune, build a new home, and buy anything you truly desire. No one else can control your thoughts; even the cruellest tyrant cannot force you to think about something you refuse to accept. When you make a deliberate decision to take control of your mind and feed it positive, constructive thoughts, you are on your way to taking control of your life. The thoughts you allow to dominate your mind will determine what you will get from life.  – Napoleon Hill

“Endless are the limits to our happiness. For what we achieve when we let go of our constraints is bound by nothing, and is extraordinary.” – Camille Lucy

If I could share 500 words to inspire, this is the important wisdom I’d want to pass along to others…

David WilcoxI am convinced that our hearts are made to heal. Instead of carrying around habitual suffering, our hearts can be cleaned of the hurt that we have lived through. Not only does this free us up to be more full of life, but the whole process can be enjoyable when we use artistic expression as our means of healing. My musical journey has been a simple practice that changes old pain into compassion and bliss.

For me, song writing has been a discipline that I call cardio spelunking. It is a deep dark adventure to retrieve bright treasure, and it would be frightening if it weren’t for music being right there to hold the flashlight.

Each time I feel a song coming on, I make the assumption that my heart is calling me to a place inside that has been waiting for me to come exploring. The rules of song writing apply, but with a deeper purpose. I use my subtle musical discernment to follow the feeling down into the deeper layers where the clues to a bigger truth are found.

When the intensity of the music interacts with whatever stored hurt I find, there is some kind of emotional alchemy that transforms dusty memories into the finer elements of compassion and forgiveness.

As I harmonize words and melody, I keep trusting in what I feel, and gradually I craft a song that not only moves me, but actually moves me in the direction I want to go, because a song can transport me to a different way of seeing this world – through the eyes of someone much wiser, someone further along. The emotional perspective I get from a song sets my sights on what is possible to feel, like being able to look down on a vista I haven’t even hiked to yet.

When that happens, I have evidence that this new way of seeing is attainable, and that gives me the determination to keep taking steps toward it. Song by song, music clarifies what I am aiming for in life.

When all this started, the bliss I felt in music was like an oasis in an otherwise barren landscape. Nothing felt as good as a good song did. I wanted more of that feeling. But when I tried to pump out more songs to quench my thirst, the well seemed to run dry – as if telling me that I was missing the point.

So instead of just wanting songs, I asked music to teach me to navigate toward how I wanted the rest of my life to feel: Let writing be a way to know my heart and focus my yearning.

These days I enjoy using the craft of song writing like a hiker would use a compass. I know that it is not the destination, but it does line itself up with something bigger than the whole world, and I trust that alignment.

For me, it’s been song writing. For you, it might be some other artistic expression that you love most. But when we study our deepest joy carefully, as if it were our heart’s treasure map, we discover that wherever we search, we are searched for. There, in the microcosm of the work we love, we find the oracle of our heart, beaconing us toward our best future.

The Guiding Light You Didn’t Know You Have

The secret of accomplishment is concentration, or the art of turning all your power upon just one point at a time.

Topics: Fulfilment, Harmony, Purpose

Gary_DoyleIf I could share 500 words to inspire, this is the important wisdom I’d want to pass along to others…

Forty years of pursuing and achieving the American Dream left me feeling unsatisfied, unfulfilled and not at peace with myself. What happened?

Following an extended period of evaluation and self-searching I made a discovery that was so simple and at the same time frightening. Why hadn’t I found the answer earlier? What held me back?

The fact is that our society teaches us that if we just follow the guidelines,we will fulfil ourselves via accomplishments and material rewards. And so we get on the treadmill and stay on the treadmill thinking that if we just clear the next hurdle we will achieve joy and happiness.

What I’ve learned is that it is only when our mind, body, spirit and soul are in alignment can we truly reach satisfaction and fulfilment. We must find our purpose, our meaning and live it if we are to reach the fulfilment that we so desire. That does not mean that the American Dream must be forsaken, it only means that we must be pursuing it in harmony with our purpose.

As I dug deeper to find my own purpose I discovered these truths.

We all have a purpose – one that provides meaning and direction for our lives. We may not have found it yet or we may have found it and suppressed it but we all have one.

It is never too late. No matter your age, no matter your past decisions, if you have only one day left to live, starting the journey will bring peace, satisfaction and fulfilment to your life.

Finding it requires a disciplined and detailed process. It is not something that is found by accident.

Purpose is not a job or a role. It is a guiding light, how you apply it to what you do is up to you.

Staying true to it is even more difficult than finding it. Family, friends and society in general are constantly causing us to question its veracity and its value and your ability to live it. Don’t give in.

Fulfilment and satisfaction come from the journey not the achievement of our purpose. It is from tending to the journey that the fruits of satisfaction and fulfilment are harvested.

Living our life with meaning requires that we must be all in. Our mind, body, spirit and soul must all be committed to our purpose. We must be aligned and balanced in our approach. We cannot get and stay fit if our spirit, soul and mind aren’t aligned towards that end. We cannot discover our purpose unless our mind, body, spirit and soul are committed to the task.

Purpose lies within and we must find it and the power that comes with it or be forever controlled by what lies without.

The time to begin is now. We need not wait for a life-changing event to prompt action. Start from that feeling inside that says, “Is this all there is”? Do it now and live a life of harmony and peace.

“There is a magnificent life that is waiting for you to wake up and remember who you are and why you are here.”– Rev. Cynthia James
