How to Become Successful – the First Step

This passage is from a renown, successful researcher and promoter of personal development and success systems the commonest question by far that I hear is “How can I be successful?” How to be successful is the driving force for most people with whom I come into contact. Not surprising really, as this is my niche and my area of special expertise.

Usually I answer with another question. “What does ‘success’ really mean to you?” This is not a cop-out. I believe this question must be answered before I can even begin to outline what I believe this person must do in order to be successful. I do not believe anybody can really be successful unless they know exactly how they personally define success.

I have met people I would describe as very successful, but who have very little money. Many successful people are not well-known. Some have no close family and few if any friends.

So, if success is not defined by wealth, fame, family situation, or friendship, then what on earth does define success?

The answer, again, is that success can only ever be defined by the person who wishes to achieve it.

Success is not to be measued by the position but by the obstacles they have over comeThe first step to becoming successful is therefore to set aside some quiet, uninterruptible time, and begin to define for yourself exactly what you mean by success. You should make sure you have at least an hour for this, and preferably more so that the exercise can be open-ended and continue for as long as you find necessary. I can promise you that if you truly want to be successful this will be the most valuable hour or two you have ever spent.

This should initially be a brainstorming session. The concept here is that you should write down everything that comes into your mind when you hear the word “success”. Do not limit yourself to things you think it should be. You are trying to arrive at your own definition of personal success, not what you have read as someone else’s definition. Anything goes here. Do not be judgemental – if the thought occurs then write it down. Be prepared to fill quite a few pages here and to spend a good twenty or thirty minutes, not just a couple of minutes filling a single sheet of A4!

When you have spent a minimum of twenty minutes doing this (and keep going well beyond if ideas are still popping into your head) you can begin sifting through those ideas and crossing out ones that are not relevant. Also look for ones that are just repeats or variants of others; keep the most relevant and cross out the others.

You should now put your scribbled lists aside. In fact, turn the paper over so you cannot see anything you have written. On a clean sheet of paper write in large, bold capitals:

WHO AM I?

Don’t try to answer this. Just read it, then sit in absolute silence for at least another five minutes. Ten, if you can manage it. This should be a form of meditation. If you are used to meditating on a phrase, then meditate on that question. If not, don’t worry – just sit there in silence.

When the five or ten minutes is up, turn over your list of words and phrases that came into your head when you thought about “success”. Start a fresh list and write down some words and phrases that now seem to resonate with you as being a start of your definition of success. These words and phrases may come from your brainstormed list, but you may find there are some completely different ones that now come into your head.

Success comes the fastest to those who see the goal the clearestWhat you are trying to do here is to make sure your own personal definition of “success” is truly aligned with your own inner “you”. Only when your definition of success is properly aligned in this way can you really start to become truly successful.

At this point, start trying to formulate a sentence or two from this new list. This sentence will be the starting point of your own personal definition of success. It will probably be quite different from anything anyone else will ever write. That is quite natural, as this is extremely personal, and not some definition foisted upon you by the media. Treasure it! This definition, I can assure you, is one of the most precious things you have, as it will be the starting point of your true success.

Your definition of success will evolve over time, and in a few years from now may be quite different from what you have just written. But it will be a true definition, and one you can now be happy to go out and seek.

Good luck!

If I could share 500 words to inspire, this is the important wisdom I’d want to pass along to others…

Take your time; there is no other time. Even when everything seems to accelerate beyond control – especially then – take your time.

Time does not exist as an objective thing; it depends completely on your perception and your connection with yourself. If you are present, in touch with how you experience reality and open to what you are experiencing, then you are the master of time, not its slave.

How do we do that? The method is simple: it has a few basic steps that require no particular skills, talents or techniques. It is called “practicing presence”.

I imagine that you, like me, want to live life and not just survive. I assume that you too want to experience life’s fullness and richness. I know that you too have asked yourself at least once, “Is this all there is to life?” There is an answer to that: presence.

It is the answer to all questions because it is the only quality that allows you to find your answers and those are the only answers that will satisfy your thirst and your longing.

Very often, it seems very difficult to take time for yourself, to find, even conceive, the possibility that you can live according to your rhythm. At times, nearly impossible. And yes, it’s not easy because pretty much everything in the world as we know it is there to distract us.

What is easy is getting lost in other people, in objects, in projects, in worrying, in acquiring and running after… and yet if we can just stop for a second and ask ourselves these questions: Who is getting lost? Who is running? Who is reading right now?

Just by asking this WHO, we are already a little less lost, a little less on the run, a little more present. And, then the next question is, present to who? To the only one that can be aware of the running and the getting lost and the reading and the asking… YOU!

You are the miracle, the fundamental awareness that recognizes each event, moment, potential, tendency, relation, emotion, sensation, and thought that is this life you want to live fully.

So the first step is: ask the question and take the time to feel the presence of the experiencer. You will be getting in touch, little by little, with what I call the Authentic Self: the unique manifestation that you are.

The second step is: remember your Self. Once you recognize that you exist at the very centre of your every moment, then just take the time to stop in that moment and remember: I am the experiencer.

The third step is: remember when you forget. Embrace your forgetting. There is no need for guilt, no need for self judgment, just notice, “Oh, I forgot!” And you will be instantaneously back and connected.

This is a practice, my friend. Something that will take time and intention and commitment, but the passion that you will find, the joy in being present, the delight for the richness of any experience, and the gratefulness….

I’M JUST AS ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT THE SUCCESS OF OTHERS,

AS I AM ABOUT MY OWN.

If I could share 500 words of wisdom to summarize what I’ve learned so far in life, these are the important things I’d want to pass along to others…

Love is all there is. The energy of love is the basis for all you know. You and every soul were born of love and you and every soul want to vibrate closer and closer to the vibration of love. When you vibrate closer to the energy of love, you become happier, freer, more creative, more joyful, and more vibrant.

Perhaps romantic love is the expression most equated with the significance of love, but intimate passion is only one form. To love is to feel joy and pleasure toward any person, place, thing, or idea.

Love is fire. Love is curiosity. Love is wisdom. Love is seeing beyond the illusion. Love is knowing. Love is creating. Love is bold. Love is strong. Love is eternal. Love is the power of life. Love is the source of all good. Love is the consequence. Love is the reason. Love is being. Love is peace. Love is all.

If you want to live more in the vibration of love to be happier, take a few wise steps this month. These steps sound simple on paper, but they take effort and focus to master. If you follow the prescribed steps, you WILL be happier by the end of a month.

1. Love yourself more.

For the next two weeks, become conscious of your “random” thoughts about yourself.

“He won’t like my idea.” “I’m such an idiot for forgetting.” “I look fat.” “I can’t win.” For every limiting phrase you think, flip it 180 degrees and tell yourself the opposite or restate it with humour. “He may like my idea!” “Oops, goofed! Oh well!” “Hey, a few extra pounds means I get to wow everyone with my sparkling personality and not just my great looks!” “I am a winner!”

It takes focus, but it’s worth it. Let love grow.

Love is an aspect of being, and when you act from being, the power you draw on is limitless because it comes from the source.” —  Deepak Chopra

2. Appreciate the good in anything and everything.

For example:

You broke your arm. You are tempted to fret about the inconvenience, but look for the benefit instead. You’ve been the only one driving carpool, so now someone else gets a chance to take responsibility.

Fourteen more inches of snow. Ahhh, a perfect day for a fire, hot cocoa, and a game of Scrabble.

Let love grow.

3. Release judgment.

Memorize the statement, “Everyone is doing the best they can within their level of awareness.” And then live as though you know it’s true. People are different. They show variety and depth, originality and plainness. They cry too much and laugh too loud. They show up late and forget birthdays. They eat, they regret, and they love. They live sadly and they live happily.

Among the variety, there is only one truth that they all have in common. They all want to be valued and appreciated. They all want love. Love them. Love them for who, what, where, and why they are. Love them more and you will love you more.

Let love grow. You will uncover more happiness because you intend to!
