Attitude and The Power of One

”People build too many walls and not enough bridges.” – Isaac Newton

An area of importance to us all, should we decide to be better

Getting the best from yourself and others all starts with one: one thought … one word … one action.

Activities010[1]“One” is the first note in orchestrating the personal attitude that shapes and directs your life – and impacts the members of your team. Contrary to the lyrics from a classic rock song, one is not the loneliest number. It’s the most important one!
Your thoughts, words, and actions are like individual notes that work in concert to create the power of one person – YOU – to make a difference. You can harness your “power of one” if you simply:

  • Catch one negative thought and turn it into a positive one;
  • Think of one thing for which you are grateful at the beginning of each day;
  • Say one “Fantastic!” when a friend or team member asks how you are doing;
  • Assume the best in one upcoming situation;
  • Keep on moving one more time when you experience adversity;
  • Help one friend or colleague in a time of need – and take pride in it.

Optimism thumbs upMany people used to feel that one vote in an election couldn’t really make a difference. Well, recent political elections that have been decided by razor thin margins have proven them wrong. A single
act can make a difference … it can create a ripple effect felt many miles and people away. So, ask yourself: What’s one thing I can do today that will make a positive difference in my attitude? Then DO IT!
Repeat that process every day and your life will improve – and so will the lives of the people you lead. Attitudes are truly powerful … and they’re contagious!

Attitude
Success comes to those who become success-conscious. Failure comes to those who indifferently allow themselves to become failure-conscious. – Napoleon Hill

Do you want a life change, but you also want to be like everybody else? I am here to tell you that I don’t think it will work very well. If you want true life change, you have to dare to be different.

People will think I’m weird!

They might. One of the things that stops most people from changing their lives is that they are afraid someone will make fun of them, criticize them. It is a possibility, but probably not as big as you think. Many people will admire you for having the courage to be different.

When I was in high school, I remember a new kid coming to school in our senior year, a time when it was most important to fit in. John was a strange kid. He didn’t really fit into any of the cliques and he was friendly to everyone. He made no attempt to change who he was in order to fit in.

Just about everyone admired and liked John. Several people started acting like him. He became one of the most popular kids in school.

Some people might think you are weird, but many will admire you and wish they had the nerve to be different.

You might. Your friends might think that you have gone over to the dark side or something. They might think that you have started taking drugs or that you have become mentally unstable. Most likely, they will be intimidated by your change and your courage to be different. They may make noises like they think you are strange, but in reality, they will be jealous.

The question I have for you is this. Do you want to disappear into who your friends think you should be, or do you want to be the person you long to be, dream of being? If these are really your friends they will understand.

I won’t know how to act!

Who cares? You are doing this so that you can change your life, change who you are. You are not doing it so that you can remain the same. It will take some getting used to, but you will find your way.

Learning to be the new you, the one who dares to be different, may take some time, but you will find that if you accept it, it will soon become fun. You will find new ways of being, new ways of behaving that are more fun than the old ways.

Why not start now?
I will lose all my friends

Why wait? Why not start being different now, right now. Be the person you always wanted to be. Change your life to what you know you should be; what you are created to be. Dare to be different! Dare to change your life. Dare to live the life you want!

Before trying to master others, be sure you are the master of yourself.
When you develop a Positive Mental Attitude, you immediately set yourself apart from the crowd. You become a leader because positive thinking leads to positive action, while negative thinking leads to apathy and inaction. When you take the initiative in any situation, others will follow simply because they like to associate with people who know where they are going. In order to lead, however, you must first be willing to discipline yourself. The first rule of leadership is never to ask others to do what you are unwilling to do yourself. You can lead only by example. Being a leader requires you to work harder and longer than the others and proving you are the master of your own destiny. – Napoleon Hill

A positive mind finds a way it can be done. A negative mind looks for all the ways it can’t be done.
Someone once said, “There are no truths; there are only perceptions of truth.” Whether or not you accept this statement, whatever you believe to be true will become your reality. Your subconscious mind will believe anything you tell it — if you repeat the words often and with conviction. When you are faced with a daunting task that you’ve never attempted before, focus on the potential for success, not on the possibilities for failure. Break the job down into smaller elements and tackle each one separately. The only difference between success and failure in any job is your attitude toward it. – Napoleon Hill

“It will never work”

“I don’t agree with the ethics of the company”

“It’s one of those pyramid things”

“What are you doing that for?”

All things a difficult before they are easyI’m sure you’ve heard these, and more, along the way. (I have).  Maybe even from people you care for and trust.  Faced with such a barrage, some people might quit.  Probably because they couldn’t come up with a good enough answer for that last question.

Read on if you would like an answer that makes the obstacles disappear.

All too often, the obstacle blocks a clear line of site of the goal, and like a small child who believes you are not there simply because they have covered their eyes with their hands, the goal disappears.

So we stand in front of the “obstacle”, our goal hidden from view, and quit.

Consider this.  Whatever your political allegiances, it is an undeniable fact that UKIP have an elected member of parliament; their first.  It has taken them 21 years.

Has it been 21 years of constant encouragement, praise and good wishes?

No, they have been continually vilified, bad-mouthed, and ridiculed; called all the names under the sun, plus a few more besides. “Fruitcakes and Loonies” included.

Keep reading if you are curious to know why this is relevant.

So in the face of that, why didn’t they just pack their bags and quit?  Because they have simply ignored their detractors and kept a clear site on the goal, and one that after 21 years and one elected MP still remains some distance away.  For them, their journey continues.

So, love them or hate them, what can we learn?  Well, there have been enough happy, smiley UKIP supporters on our televisions screens in the last few days to suggest that they are more than satisfied with where they are on their journey, so why would they quit?

On the other hand, all the criticism, name-calling and equivalents of “It’s one of those pyramid things” by their opponents have not made the obstacle big enough to obscure the goal.

Optimism is a crucial choice we make in establishing expectations for ourselves and others as we begin to move forward through adversity.   ~Christopher Novak

This is the good bit….

Does that mean that we have to make our goals so big that we can see them whatever the obstacle that stands before us?

Does the goal really have to be that big to overwhelm any obstacle?

No.

Just keep it where you can see it.

Or more importantly, keep it where you can feel it.

Goals allow you to change the direction in your favourOnce you can put in your mind how it will really feel to achieve your goal, it will fuel a furnace in your heart that makes obstacles invisible – because they simply cannot fit between you and your goal.

It lives inside you; it is part of you.

You have lit the furnace.  Now you just need to plot your route to your goal.

So remind yourself, why did you get involved in this business?  Do you still want that?  Was it the free time?  The residual income?  Retirement?  More time with the family? …………

Take a moment to ponder that.

Would you like to know how to light that furnace?

Would you like to know how to plot the route?
