Identifying your GOALS

Goals are like magnets

Identifying Your Goals

I have spoken about goals often in my blogs, I hope they are as important to you s they are to me..  They are a part of our lives FOR EVER!

Many people have stalled goals, so I am sure this was very helpful to many people.  But also many people don’t really have "proper" goals at all.

How about you?  What are your main goals?  Not goals for your business (whether it belongs to you or you are simply an employee).  Not goals you have for others (your partner or your children for example).  Yes, you need business and family goals, but you also need real personal goals.  So what are your personal goals?

At this point I know I will have lost some of my readers, as when they look at their stated goals they realize they don’t have any personal goals, just goals for others.  If you are in that group, bear with me.

Now let’s have a look at those personal goals and see how real they are.

Determination Desire Goals etcFirstly, hands up those who gave a monetary goal.  Perhaps an amount of money in the bank (maybe £1Mllion?).  Or a regular amount you want to receive every month or every year?  If your hand is up, let me be a bit controversial.  What you have isn’t a real goal at all!  It may be a way you can achieve the goal, but it isn’t a goal in itself.  Unfortunately, though, many people try to turn this means to an end into the end itself.  Wanting to gain a certain amount of money in order to achieve an end goal is not a bad thing.  But wanting to gain that money with no other aim other than simply to have the money is not a good thing.  Not a good thing at all!

If you felt your goal was a certain amount of money, I would like you to start digging deeper.  Why do you want that money?  What will you use it for?  What will it change in your life?  Whatever answers you get to those questions, as long as those answers inspire you, then those are your real goals, not the money.  Some people will probably feel I am splitting hairs here, and that it doesn’t matter what you want the money for, that first you want to get the money and then you can decide how to use it.  You could not get further from the truth!  Your goal has to inspire you.  It has to be a real goal.  Money is NOT a real goal.  It doesn’t hurt to include it as one of your goals, but only as a minor goal and not your main target.

This is a fine world for the person who knows precisely what he or she expects from life and is busy getting it.
We are happiest when we are striving to achieve a goal. When we achieve one goal, it’s a natural human tendency to set another, usually bigger, one. W. Clement Stone calls it inspirational dissatisfaction — the let own one experiences after a goal has been achieved and before the next step toward a new one has been taken. When you begin to experience that nagging feeling, it’s time to get into action! Make sure you have a long-range plan in place so that when one short-term goal has been achieved, there is a natural progression toward the next. Napoleon Hill

The reality is that although money can be used to get whatever it is you want to have, it is not usually the only possible way to get it.  Maybe it is the most likely way – it probably is.  But it is not the ONLY way.  And on the basis of that well-known quote "the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil" (1 Timothy 6:10) I urge you not to put your main emphasis on simply acquiring wealth without knowing why you want to acquire it and exactly how you plan to use it.

Many people, when they first realize the mistake they have made in confusing wealth and their real goals, suddenly find they have true goals that they didn’t really recognize before.  Goals that really excite them.  And even in some cases goals that don’t need any greater wealth for them to be achievable.

Through the harmony and ultimately the balance of the feminine energy, of that goddess energy, you will unlock the Vortex of Power that lies within. – Lazaris

Secondly, hands up those who gave what, frankly, they would consider an unrealistic goal.  Often this mistake is compounded by being a monetary goal too.  Back to our £ Million in the bank account when, perhaps, you have a minimum wage job and no more money in your account than is needed for this month’s expenses.  Whether the unrealistic goal is a monetary goal or not, if you see it as unrealistic you should modify it.

Notice I have said "if you see it as unrealistic".  Not "if it is unrealistic".  The key factor here is what you truly believe is possible, not what IS possible.  I happen to believe that everything is possible.  But that doesn’t mean I will try working towards goals that I know make me flinch when I state them, with an inner belief that this is not achievable for me yet.  Everything is possible, but many of those possibilities are an end goal that seems too far away to excite us into trying to achieve it now.

Your thoughts ceate your futureIdentify your personal goals, examine them, ensure they excite you, and ensure they don’t elicit from you an immediate reaction that they are not possible.  As a result of this examination, don’t be afraid to change those goals.  Your goals should always be evolving anyway.  The goals you have today are most unlikely to be the same goals you had five years ago, and are just as unlikely to be the same goals you will have in five years’ time.  If you didn’t immediately come up with any goals, then now is the time to try finding some.  Identify real personal goals and, trust me, you will find your life is more meaningful – and the meaning will make you happier.

Work towards real, personal goals, and as you move closer to them and achieve some of them, replace them with other, perhaps more ambitious goals.

The power is from within, the choice is yours

6 Things Happy People Never Do

You just might be the miracle someone is looking for today.
Remember that every single moment has a miracle of possibility.
If I am present to the moment, something I know, something I can share, something I can give or some way I can presence love can actually bring a miracle in a moment that I am sharing with someone.
I encourage you to walk through this day remembering that you just might be the miracle someone is looking for today. Here’s To Miracles, Mary Morrissey

6 Things Happy People Never Do

Happiness is not something you postpone for the future;
it is something you design into the present.

Happy people do a lot of things.  They spend time expressing gratitude, cultivating optimism, practicing kindness, nurturing loving relationships, committing to meaningful goals, savouring life’s little pleasures, and so on and so forth.

But they NEVER…

1.  Mind other people’s business.

Forget about what others are doing.  Stop looking at where they are and what they have.  Nobody is doing better than you because nobody can do better than you.  YOU are walking your own path.  Sometimes the reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the-scenes circumstances with everyone else’s public highlight reel.  We listen to the noise of the world, instead of ourselves.  So stop the comparisons!  Ignore the distractions.  Listen to your own inner voice.  Mind your own business.

Keep your best wishes and your biggest goals close to your heart and dedicate time to them every day.  Don’t be scared to walk alone, and don’t be scared to enjoy it.  Don’t let anyone’s ignorance, drama, or negativity stop you from being the best you can be.  Keep doing what you know in your heart is right, for YOU.  Because when you are focused on meaningful work and at peace within yourself, almost nothing can shake you.  (Angel and I discuss this in more detail in the “Passion and Growth” chapter of 1,000 Little Things Happy, Successful People Do Differently.)

2.  Seek validation of self-worth from others.

When you are content to simply be yourself, without comparing and competing to impress others, everyone worthwhile will respect you.  And even more importantly, you will respect yourself.

How are you letting others define you?  What would you do differently if you knew nobody would judge you?

Truth be told, no one has the right to judge you.  People may have heard your stories, and they may think they know you, but they can’t feel what you are going through; they aren’t living YOUR life.  So forget what they think and say about you.  Focus on how you feel about yourself, and keep walking the path that feels best under your feet.

Those who accept you are your friends.  Those who don’t are your teachers.  If someone calls you something and it’s true, it’s not your problem because it’s true.  If someone calls you something and it’s not true, it’s not your problem because it’s not true.  Either way, whatever they call you is not your problem.  What other people call you is their problem…

What you call yourself, and who you decide to become, is your problem.

3.  Rely on other people and external events for happiness.

Unhappiness lies in that gap between what we have now and what we think we need.  But the truth is, we don’t need to acquire anything more to be content with what we already have.  We don’t need anyone else’s permission to be happy.  Your life is magnificent not because someone says it is, or because you have acquired something new, but because you choose to see it as such.  Don’t let your happiness be held hostage.  It is always yours to choose, to live and experience.

As soon as you stop making everyone and everything else responsible for your happiness, the happier you’ll be.  If you’re unhappy now, it’s not someone else’s fault.  Take full responsibility for your own unhappiness, and you will instantly gain the ability to be happier.  Stop seeking in vain to arrange conditions that will make you happy.  Simply choose to appreciate the greatness that is yours in this moment, and the right conditions will start to line up around the contentment you seek.

The greater part of your happiness or unhappiness depends upon your outlook, and not upon our situation.  Even if things aren’t perfect right now, think of all the beauty still left around you.  A good reason to smile is always one thought away; choose to tap into it any time you like.  (Read The Gifts of Imperfection.)

4.  Hold on to resentment.

Let today be the day you stop being haunted by the ghosts from your past.  What happened in the past is just one chapter in your story; don’t close the book, just turn the page.

We’ve all been hurt by our own decisions and by others, and while the pain of these experiences is normal, sometimes it lingers for too long.  Feelings of resentment urge us to relive the same pain over and over, and we have a hard time letting go.

Forgiveness is the remedy.  It allows you to focus on the future without combating the past.  To understand the infinite potential of everything going forward is to forgive everything already behind you.  Without forgiveness, wounds can never be healed and personal growth can never be achieved.  It doesn’t mean you’re erasing the past, or forgetting what happened.  It means you’re letting go of the resentment and pain, and instead choosing to learn from the incident and move on with your life.

5.  Spend prolonged periods of time in negative environments.

You can’t make positive choices for the rest of your life without an environment that makes those choices easy, natural, and enjoyable.  So protect your spirit and potential from contamination by limiting your time with negative people and the environments they inhabit.

When other people invite you to act like victims, when they whine and moan about the unfairness of life, for example, and ask you to agree, to offer condolences, and to participate in their grievances, WALK AWAY.  When you join in that game of negativity you always lose.

Even when you’re alone, create a positive mental space for yourself.  Make it a point to give up all the thoughts that make you feel bad, or even just a few of them that have been troubling you, and see how doing that changes your life.  You don’t need negative thoughts.  They are all lies.  They solve nothing.  All they have ever given you is a false self that suffers for no reason.  (Read Buddha’s Brain.)

6.  Resist the truth.

It is a certain deathtrap when we spend our lives learning how to lie, because eventually these lies grow so strong in our minds that we become bad at seeing, telling and living our own truth.  Lives come apart so easily when they have been held together with lies.  If you resist the truth, you will live a lie every day as the truth haunts your thoughts every night.  You simply can’t get away from your truth by moving dishonestly from one place to the next.

So don’t bend; don’t water it down; don’t try to hide the truth with deception; don’t edit your own soul according to the fashion of what’s popular.  It is better to offer no explanation or excuse than a false one.  It takes courage and strength to admit the truth, but it is the only way to truly live.  Accept what is, embrace it fully, and live for the possibilities that lie ahead.

Your turn…

When we start looking at everything that might go wrong, we fear then to attempt.  Our opportunity today is to pay attention to any thoughts that could be vibrations of doubt and turn them into faith.  Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt.  But not today.  Our doubts will not have their way with us today.  Our faith shall prevail.  To Your Prevailing Faith,  Mary Morrissey

I have found that helping people to develop personal goals has proven to be the most effective way to help them cope with problems. Observing the lives of people who have mastered adversity, I have noted that they have established goals and sought with all their effort to achieve them. 22 Tips for Becoming the Best You

If I could share 500 words to inspire, this is the important wisdom I’d want to pass along to others…

Don’t focus on being happy, focus on being busy – so busy with work and people you love that you don’t have time to ask yourself if you’re happy.

Find what you love doing, and then do it. Or if you can’t do that, learn to love what you have to do.

Meditate or learn to be alone with your thoughts for a few minutes a day.

Be yourself, but strive to be the best version of yourself.

Read at least one non-fiction book per month.

Learn as many general skills as you can (specific computer software, building/repairing things, writing clearly, etc.). It will help you with whatever specific path you choose to follow.

Persevere. Believe in yourself. But still make some adjustments based on people’s response (or there lack of).

Once your hobby becomes your job, get a new hobby.

Don’t take the highest paying job. Take the highest learning job.

Your default should be to be nice to people. Or at least polite. It doesn’t take much effort and people remember insults much longer than compliments.

Accept people as they are; don’t anticipate that they will ever change to how you want them to be. And if they do change for the better, it’s a bonus. You can’t change someone who doesn’t want to change.

Stop thinking about doing something, and just start doing it. Eventually you’ll get better.

The only company that might support you for your entire career is the one you create.

Create your own work. Don’t wait around for permission.

Take pride in whatever work you do, and do it to the best of your ability, even if you don’t like doing it. If you do work you dislike well enough, eventually you’ll get to do work you like.

Don’t only focus on work.

Being rejected only hurts if it’s not constant. Be rejected constantly and eventually you only notice the times people say “Yes.”

Trust your instincts, but also hone your instincts.

If someone tells you they’ll do something by a certain date, and they don’t do it and don’t warn you that they won’t be done, they are not reliable. Continue working with them at your own peril.

Be friends and work with people who you think are smarter and more talented than you.

Marriage occurs when both people believe that the other person is out of their league. Usually one of them will be proven correct.

Do. Review and improve. Do again. Repeat until you’re #1.

What I find amazing is that when you go out of your way to give to another person, you will also receive great things in your life. This is what is called the Law of Giving and Receiving. Ian FoxIf I could share 500 words to inspire, this is the important wisdom I’d want to pass along to others…

Don’t waste your life, your beauty, your infinite connection to all things, worrying, overworking and collecting “material things!”

Control your ego; temper your desires and let forgiveness, love and personal freedom be the beacon that guides you.

Awaken from the delusion of having to show off and prove yourself to others. The best house, car, clothes and latest gadget mean little, because they are not who you really are beyond thought and form. The things you want to own, invariably end up owning you. They become the “screws” of your life, nailing you to the floor, preventing you from spanning new pastures. You are more than what you own and not defined by what you owe.

Step off the mouse wheel by refraining from doing things you hate, decorating your life with ego fuelled crud and people who see you as a means to an end. You’re not a slave to someone else’s agenda. You’re a free spirit, not a worshipper to the daily rituals of modern society.

Step back and see the merry-go-round of illusions for what it is. There is nothing wrong in wanting better things in life. As long as you are not paying for them long after the shine has worn off and the ephemeral ego-fix has evaporated. Today’s treasure is tomorrow’s trash! Tame your mind with spiritual awareness, discipline and practice delayed gratification. Don’t conform, reform!

Be yourself and if others can’t accept that, then don’t allow their judgement to become your prison cell. Simplifying your life and becoming more spiritually aware is the answer. Money, glamour and objects are not gods to be adored and adorned. The weight of these things holds you down and corrupts your energy. Give stuff away, lighten your load and escape being shackled to the system. Create an unrestricted life for yourself and those dear to you. Less mess is less stress.

Live free by choosing what you want to do, not what you “have” to do. Most humans fall out of bed in the morning, only to re-connect with the mainframe of human slavery and egoic entrapment. You can only be free to the degree to which you are not trapped by physical, financial or mental obligation.

To avoid the human condition of perpetual disappointment, yearning, reaction, problem creation, fear and feelings of inadequacy, you must raise your consciousness beyond the realm of compulsive thinking and judging.

The truth is you need to raise your energy and consciousness, not to be more attractive and powerful or to make loads of money, but to open your heart and mind to a new found freedom and elevate your current existence.

You appreciate most people are trapped, held hostage by their egos and consume far more than they will ever need. They rush around from one drama and crisis to another, trying to make sense of it all! The more you let go, the more things seem to happen effortlessly and more natural flow you create in your life.

A few years from now an empty space will mark the spot where you once stood. All your things will be gone. If you want to live forever make a difference in the lives of others and change yourself today.

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” John F. Kennedy
