7 Secrets I Learnt From The Leadership Pill by Ken Blanchard

1. Leadership is not just what happens when you are there. It’s what happens when you are not there.

This is a very useful distinction and should become an outcome for anyone who wants to lead. Team that functions even if the leader is not around is something unique and requires a different level of skills. The next points will give couple of ideas how to get there. A great leader builds their people. The better your people, the more free time you have.

2. Profit is the applause you get for taking care of your customers and creating a motivating environment for people.

Isn’t it an interesting twist in perception and sequence? There are so many organisations that do exactly opposite. This model helps to remove from constantly focusing on just getting a quick financial gain that looks good in a short term, but on the other hand it can strongly damage the two most important parts of your organisations: your customers and your team.

3. Leadership is not something you do to people, it is something you do with them.

Simple but powerful truth. If you are setting off for a team leading journey, remember to take your team with you. Communicate and involve. Simple but also so often forgotten.

4. The key to effective leadership is the relationship you build with your team.

An extension from the previous points. The relationship you build with your team should be the way how you judge your success as a leader.

5. Sharing the big picture puts everyone on the same page.

Effective communication will always be the key leadership skill while building a team. A clear vision gives the strong sense of direction, or even a sense of excitement and a powerful drive, if properly communicated.

6. You will go a lot further if you stop to refuel.

That is something I must admit I have been guilty of. It is so crucially important to pause, relax and change your perception with different activities, different people. So take time for sport, short trips, dancing, reading watching movies, hiking etc. If you are scoring and winning take time to celebrate, if you are missing your target and not really getting what you want, find time to reflect and get some distance to gain new perspective. Albert Einstein put it nicely: “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them”

7. The highest achievement of a leader is winning respect and trust of your team.

Again, I love what Ken Blanchard is doing here. Measure your success of leadership not by financial numbers but trust and respect. These two ingredients will lay a solid foundation that will be a springboard for long lasting financial results.

Leadership lesson 8 stand guard at the door of your mindWe all have been told, (at least I have) how important events are to not only get the information, but it is vitally important to associate with the leaders and future leaders that will help propel your business to the next level.

What qualities do we know leaders have that we want to follow to become leaders ourselves? That is a very important question to ask yourself! A leader must be a servant and a debtor. His first responsibility is to define reality and then say thank you.

Even if you don’t see yourself as a leader right now, that is where you want to be in order to create your dreams. First be a leader that leads yourself and your family.

There are only two tools available to the educator. The easy one is fear. Fear is easy to awake, easy to maintain, but ultimately toxic. Other tool is passion.

Here is a list to start you off:

  • Leaders are great followers as they followed great leaders to become leaders themselves Find the person that you can most learn from even if you are not sure you can fill their shoes. At first you will not be able to, but who do you think you can learn the most from? (Every great leader has someone he has looked up to and learned from)
  • Leaders are plugged in By being plugged in to the events, the calls the community you can always have your finger on what is happening in your business. (attends events both the ones nearby and the ones that require travel)
  • Leaders lead by example Your team is only as good as what you yourself do, even if they cannot always see you. I always thought that was interesting but it was uncanny, if I was off, so was my team, if I was hot so was my team. (he never expects of others what he wouldn’t do himself)
  • Leaders take responsibility We never blame others for things we did or others did. Its still up to us what we do after something happens, blame doesn’t have anything to do with it. (he doesn’t ever waste time playing the blame game)
  • Leaders have integrity This is a word many have not learned but is so key today. Its more than just being honest, its the core of your being. (he knows the trust he builds with others is built on his own character and integrity)
  • Leaders make themselves available This one is really a big one for me. If we do not help and support our team members what do we have. Its not about showing off but showing how. (He sees himself as a leader and helper)
  • Leaders have charisma (confidence and posture) He never hangs his success on anyone certain individual. It is the pure just knowing where you are going which is so powerful!
  • Leaders never quit. (If he fails temporarily he simply looks at it from another angle and keeps on going! Its the ability to get back up and keep going that makes the leaders so attractive to others.

Sure you are going to get new tools and definitely encouragement and new belief. But I believe the most important thing is to pay attention to the pattern that leaders set and follow those patterns.

How can you make a big dream come true?  You need to have one secret element, and when you have that secret element, nothing will get in your way. That element is an intense desire! We frequently use the terms leadership and management interchangeably as if they mean the same thing. They don’t. We lead people and manage things, such as work and the everyday tasks of our lives.

Leading is about our humanness, our relationships and our interactions with each other. Leaders are those who choose to make the shift from success – acquiring and accumulating material things – to significance – making a positive difference in everyone’s life.

Leading is about possibility and potential. It is about creativity and innovation. It is about our well-being and fulfilment and generating common good. It focuses on our purpose and meaning, our connection and contribution, and our growth and mastery. It is about collaboration and cooperation to solve our common problems. Leading is about diminishing our three universal fears of not having support, not being in control and not feeling adequate, so that everyone thrives and realizes their potential.

So, if you are in a leadership role, I ask you to consider what I am saying in what you stand for and how you show up. If you are a “follower”, I ask you to consider if the leaders you follow are there to support the common good and help each and every one of us to be the best we can be and have the life we want. In this way, if you make this choice, you lead as love and so you are also a leader.

We can change the world by changing our personal beliefs about this one thing: What makes a leader a leader? When we change our beliefs our actions will be different through our choices for who we are as leaders and who we follow or support. Every choice – who you work with, how you vote, what you buy – makes a difference.

Remember this criterion: Love makes a leader a leader. Care, understanding and respect for everyone and everything in life. We all deserve nothing less.
